Chapter Eight

Tamir

The medic and I are now lying on the ground, enjoying a post-sex cuddle. For the first time in a long time, I feel complete. Kenzie managed to piece me back together in a way that I wasn’t sure was possible.

Her head rests on my shoulder, her blonde hair fanning all along my chest. I gently stroke it, letting the soft tendrils get tangled up in my fingers. If I could stay like this forever, I would. Just me and Kenzie in our own little bubble. None of the worries and troubles from the outside world encroaching on the safe space we’ve made for ourselves.

But that’s not how the real world works. If we just sit here, not worrying about anything else, the situation back on the compound will surely get much worse. Ignoring problems doesn’t make them go away.

The pull to protect my pack will always be there. It’s just programmed into me.

“We should probably get back to the house and warn Anson. Let him know what we found.” It’s like Kenzie just read my mind. I guess she’s more like me than I originally thought.

The two of us stand up, our bodies no longer touching. No longer being able to touch her has me wanting to be touching her again. I’ve never lacked this much self-control before in my life. I really need to rein this all in.

Kenzie and I put our clothes back on. I’m a little sad our near-perfect night is coming to an end, but when it’s time, it’s time.

“Is your ankle okay enough for you to walk on?”

Kenzie looks down at her foot, turning it in a circle a few times. “Yeah, it’s all better. I guess I just had to rest it for a couple hours.” She blushes at the end of her sentence. She’s probably thinking about all of the resting we just did.

“Let’s head back then.”

The two of us walk side by side back towards the compound. Neither one of us is saying much of anything. We’re definitely a little closer to one another, our bodies side by side only separated by a few feet. The walk back home is definitely less tense than the one we took to get here.

I’m still not totally sure what to say. What just happened between Kenzie and me probably changes things between us, but at the same time, she isn’t saying much of anything either, so who knows. It’s probably better to just not think about it. If she wants something from me, then she’ll ask. I’m sure of it.

We get back to the manor house. The aftermath of last night’s party is all over the ground. I’m sure they’ll be people cleaning up later today, but a lot of them are probably asleep, getting ready to deal with whatever hangout they are about to have.

It is pretty early. The sun is just rising as we approach the front door.

“Do you think Anson is awake already?”

“He’s usually up pretty early, but because of the party, he might still be asleep.
